‘AMERICAN’ DOESN’T HAVE A HYPHEN

Exclusive: Mychal Massie targets those who twist Dr. King’s words to foment societal strife

Question: What do a “Gordian knot” and Martin Luther King have in common? Answer: The convoluted logic that has become inextricably tied to those who most frequently pay lip service to his memory. No part of Dr. King’s oratorical legacy is treated with less logic than his emphasis on the character of a person juxtaposed to the color of a person. And not unlike Greek tradition, it will take bold action, i.e., an Alexandrian effort, to rectify same.

Unfortunately, blacks who use race as currency undermine the truth of Dr. King’s efforts, and whites who barter with said racial currency are eager to keep it that way. It is an ignorance of such proportions that the distortion of the logic is defended rather than eschewed.

Sadly, many blacks today are more concerned with being recognized for the color of their skin than they are about getting a solid education and abandoning the animus many harbor toward whites (and toward blacks who do not embrace their heterodoxy of bitterness). And even more egregious, they are blind to the harm done to them by holding said antithetical views. I submit that blacks should pursue the end of abortion as they do the recognition of color. Abortion is the No. 1 killer of blacks, not calls for a colorblind society – but I digress.

Calls for a colorblind society have been misidentified as evidence of not liking oneself. It is seen as creating a zeitgeist that, at best, ignores and, at worst, denies past grievances and rejects cultural heritage. In reality, those claims are nothing more than sophistic justifications for the rejection of modernity.

What is relinquished in a colorblind society is the ability to blame color of skin for any infraction or slight and the right to foment discord based upon inculcated differences. There are those who will attack me, but focusing on character, to the exclusion of skin color, is not a perversion of justice. I argue that we must embrace the equality of Americanism, not the separative mindset of race-based preferences, race-based injustice and race-based inequality, juxtaposed to the conjoined injustices of life that are experienced by all, despite color of skin.

I was recently recognized as one of the top 20 most influential “black” Republicans. I admit that it is a good feeling to be recognized for one’s body of work and contributions. I understand that the recognition was made with the utmost respect intended, and I in no way am implying anything else. But, being the best or most whatever of a particular group is being the best of a limited number, and limited numbers are only valuable when you are talking classic automobiles or memorabilia. My point being, one of the 20 most influential Republicans overall would be inclusive and a representative value of the whole – such as in 2008, when I was recognized as the “Conservative Man of Year” (sans color) by the Conservative Party of New York.

I don’t mention said recognitions for the purpose of braggadocio, but rather to make my point. Michael Jordan, Reggie Jackson, Tiger Woods and Lewis Hamilton didn’t/don’t aspire to be the greatest black athlete in their respective fields – they aspired and aspire to be the best of all time. Additionally, nowhere in Scripture have I read God making distinctions of who’s best based on color of skin, even in the Old Testament.

Skin color has been elevated over character. The NAACP in the recent past were prepared to give their Image Award to a man indicted in two states for multiple horrific acts of sexual depravity against young teenage girls because he was black, but they label as racist tea-party groups that are committed to making government adhere to the Constitution, groups comprised of people of all descriptions and from all walks of life.

It is my opinion – and I neither retreat nor apologize for my conviction – that it will not be until we put aside color and lift character (both moral and godly) that we will enjoy the true wealth of America equally. Until we are recognized singularly, as Americans rather than as a color prefix separated by a hyphen, we will continue to be a fragmented and angry citizenry.

It is obvious that anger and fragmentation is in the best interest of those who prostitute color as currency, but as I referenced earlier, that is only of benefit to a small, select number who advantage themselves mightily at the expense of the true unity of all. And I believe Dr. King would agree.

To those individuals who feel they must use a hypen to self modify their own personality, maybe they could be (trained) taught the phrase it thus – “American-African” or American-Mexican” – or whatever.

At least give America the FIRST word. Anything else is an insult, and a slap in the face.

This is ONE NATION UNDER GOD – made up of hundreds of diverse cultures.

    AMERICA! Be an AMERICAN, PERIOD!

or, you could always go home…where ever that may be…

I grew up with allot of Blacks and many I knew and still know today are conservative in many ways but are stuck to the side of the Dem party just as to many Latino’s. Que triste!!

I used to have a lot to say about your posts. To this one I say, simply, “Well said.” Your goal is ambitious, but its implementation is opposed by many narrow-minded bigots and manipulators of both races. I hope for the best but am certainly prepared (armed) for the worst. Mr. Obama is certainly not a fan of your philosophy. Too much money and power to receive from divisiveness.

Mychal> Great Post/Rant. You made me go back to Greek Mythology to remember Phygian Gordium and Alexander The Great. When Alexander was faced with the challange of the Gordium knot, as I understand, he pulled the knot out and exposed the two ends allowing him to untie it. He did not have to cut through it. Thus, the hyphenated Nationalities can be easily removed if races will allow it. If we are not all “Americans”(Citizens) living on U.S. soil, then, what are we? I am not Palatine-American. I am an American. My husband is not Greek-American, he is an American. The hymphenated races (especially NAACP!) keep promoting segregation as far as I’m concerned. You, Mychal, have earned your way like so many Americans and to label you for your race is totally ignorant. The race flag flies in Washington and elsewhere, now more than it ever did, and the people who hoist the flag will not have it any other way. The Hyphen has not been severed and is alive and active. Sad, but true.

marilyn: the battle lies w/ those of us who recognize the truth and are willing not to participate by the rules being implemented…I refuse to call homosexuals gay…they are homosexuals if they don’t like it tough they’re still homosexuals until they choose not to be…it is the same w/ this african american stupidity…I refuse to use same and refuse to allow others to so reference me…and I am using color as an identifier less and less…it is up to us not to play by their divisive rules…

Right on target with no punches pulled as usual Mychal! My understanding of Dr. King’s message was always that ALL should have the opposrtunity to participate in THE AMERICAN LIFE and have the same opportunities to succeed based on THEIR OWN EFFORTS, not any entitlement for race, gender, etc. I wish that in celebrating Dr. King’s life and great accomplishments, that message would be at the forefront. So you really don’t want to run for office, huh?

    • Mychal January 17, 2012 at 3:25 pm #

deb: Dr. King stood on the constitution…pursuant to me and elected office suffice it to say I wouldn’t run for dinner…I might walk quickly for a very good vintage cigar…lol…

Challenging to my thinking, as usual. I am saddened -really saddened -by the apparent desire of the vast majority of Americans to not think. There are two primary groups that profit and benefit from Americans accepting the role of ‘sheeple’: the international bankers (Fed Res, IMF, World Bank, BIS, etc.,) and the military industrial complex. The most profitable business on the planet is, and always has been, war. Wars are not fought except for the benefit of money control. And money control doesn’t mind at all giving the poor black and other non-whites food stamps, free slum rent, and abortions to keep the control of the money. I’m white. If i can see it, whey can’t others. There is only one candidate for President that has the courage to address the true criminals in our world; international banksters, fractional reserve banking and those that get rich off of war. Ron Paul is the only candidate willing to call these banking thieves what they truly are. Newt won’t. Mitt won’t. Rick 1 and Rick 2 won’t. These guys are part of the same crowd. These guys want their own chance to raid the cash register, and won’t piss off the banksters who will dictate this election. Banking gangster don’t go to war. They simply start the wars, and then finance both (or all) sides at great profit and interest, keeping 98% of us in oppressive debt. Then they give us food stamps and free or reduced slum rent. Unless you’re a really poor black on the African continent, and then you get genocide; breakfast, lunch and supper. Anyone who doubts this, look what happened to Muammar and Sadam when they bucked up against the internationl banking criminals. And ‘W’ and Barry and Slick Willie were more than willing to do what they were told to subdue the planet, all for a handsome fee, don’t ya know! And whose kids went and died to protect Goldman Sachs and Morgan Banking ventures in troubling markets? Mine and yours. Not theirs. Banking intersts don’t go to war. They just pay politicians to start them and run them, and the banksters finance all sides at interst and profit and debt. And the sheeple continue to graze….. Father God, pleas wake Adam from his stooper. It’s time for Adam to realize who he is, and begin to bring order to our chaos. Shalom, Ya’ll.

Your comments remind me of a book I read many moons ago, “The Arms of Krupp”. In a nut shell, it tells the history of Krupp and their factories that manufacture weapons. I always thought it strange that they provided arms to both sides during WW II. Neither side would bomb their factories because it would hurt their ability to buy the arms as much as it would the enemy. And Krupp got even more rich. Proof of your article.
