Dr. Ben Carson For President? Not So Fast!

As many of you are aware, my position on Dr. Ben Carson is that he would be a fine articulator of an anti-obamacare message and of self-determination. But I have made no secret that I didn’t see him as presidential material despite the people who jumped on the Ben for president wagon because he gave a good soundbite.

I have repeatedly said that, at the very least, his position on the Second Amendment warranted very close examination of his core positions. Now it comes to light that he has what can only be defined as a very uncomfortable position on illegal aliens.

In his book, “America the Beautiful,” Dr. Carson writes on page 102, “I believe we have taken the moral low road on this issue [i.e., illegal aliens]. Some segments of our economy would virtually collapse without these undocumented workers—we all know that—yet we continue to harass and deport many individuals who are simply seeking a better life for themselves and their families. Is there a way to apply logic to this issue and arrive at an intelligent solution?” (Ben Carson Has Presidential Ambitions, But Is Soft On Illegal Aliens; Jerry McConnell; Canada Free Press; 2/4/14)

Well hells-bells, Ben, if that’s the case why don’t we just open the prison gates and release all the bank robbers and drug dealers who are legal citizens? Because following the logic of “illegal aliens are just trying to provide a better life for their family” is exactly the same argument that can be made pursuant to many bank robbers and drug dealers. So why should illegal aliens get all the breaks and special consideration?

This is a serious matter. I’m not prepared to throw Dr. Carson under the bus just yet, but I am categorically saying that people should stop anointing him as the next great thing before we know all of his positions.

This is the mistake that we always make. With the first good soundbite people immediately proclaim a person worthy of president. They don’t bother to vet the person; they go by one soundbite and some favorable interviews on television. And what is worse — they shoot the voice of reason who says “let’s hold off until we find out more about the person.” This is a mistake we cannot afford to continue making.

Dr. Carson’s point of view, as he articulated in his book, is not in line with the view against amnesty or fast-tracking illegal aliens to citizenship. They should be deported or arrested and sent to prison. They should not be rewarded for being criminals when our legal citizens are punished for less.

The presence of illegal aliens here is not a victimless crime. The victims are those whose identities are stolen, the taxpayers who are charged with higher property and school taxes, theft, drugs, human trafficking, assaults, alcohol abuse, vehicular crimes that cannot be collected upon by the injured, theft of hospital/doctor services. Those are just some of the crimes perpetrated.

Dr. Carson can be used to articulate the message about why obamacare is an abominable piece of legislation, and why it will destroy our economy. But that is as close to the White House as I’m prepared for him to come.

The last thing we need is another person in the White House who has a confused opinion on the Second Amendment, and who gives all appearance of supporting favorable treatment for illegal aliens. ‘

The Second Amendment is our Constitutional right, and it must be held inviolate. And until and unless we are prepared to reward criminals who are legal citizens for breaking the law, we should, under no circumstances, reward illegal aliens for breaking our Sovereign law.

Let's face it, Dr. Carson would be a far better choice than Hillary or another Obama liberal pos. I'm not saying that I would vote for him, but when Warren or Clinton are facing off, I would prefer Dr.Carson.

david tierney: I disagree and stand by my opinion…his position on the second amendment is an attack on the constitution and be viewed no other way…we continue to elect people who believe they have the right to pick and choose what part of the constitution they will support and abide by…pursuant to his position on illegal aliens said speaks for itself…we must stop electing the lesser of two evils believing a little evil is better than the other evil…I believe carson’s best and most positive impact can be and should be as the sharp end of the spear to repeal obamacare…

I find your article a bit short.
Your reference to Carson on immigration was self serving.
He did not advocate full blown amnesty. In fact, if you would have been a bit more objective, you would have included his proposed solution which followed in the next sentence; and which required that illegals LEAVE the USA and return legally if possible.

Your critique of his gun position is uselessly vague.
Would you please be more specific?
Which of these do you use to condemn him?
        = = = =

Law-abiding citizens absolutely should have gun rights. (Mar 2014)
Law-abiding citizens have right to guns without registration. (Mar 2014)
Semi-automatic weapons ok in countryside, but not cities. (Mar 2013)

tony: I stand by my position that Carson should be the sharp end of the spear in opposition to obamacare but he has an extremely troubling view of the Second Amendment, i.e., he believes guns should be restricted by geographical regions…and his position on illegals is just as troubling by the words in his own book he views our not bending over to illegals as immoral…he is pro amnesty…we cannot support people like that for office because they give good sound bites…

Here is a REAL conservative Leader and a Man I would be proud to call my President.

tony: Let me restate my position…you presumably read the article…why would you support a man for president who is pro-amnesty and who doesn’t hold the Second Amendment as inviolate…how many times do you have to be burned by poor choices before you wake up…

karen gilbert: how about we support someone for president who is pro constitution, pro small government, anti entitlement, anti abortion, anti homosexual marriage, anti race/gender based policies, anti amnesty for illegals…how about we stop throwing our support behind anyone who gives a good sound bite…

  5. Rick Sallee June 28, 2014 at 1:53 pm #

Mychal–Ben did NOT say let ALL illegal immigrants stay here. He said allow them to work here as a worker program ( such as Canada's ) would do . I'm assuming he would require a background check, as any concerned country would. Please allow some margin of leeway here as no one asked him to elaborate on his plan—-runbenrun— Ben as president—Allen as vice President

rick sallee: you are familiar with the old adage of when you “assume” you make and “ass” out of “u” and “me”…carson said our treatment of illegals was “immoral” that doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room pursuant to what his views are…tangential to that he holds a view of the second amendment that is not in line with the constitution…I say let him be the sharp end of the spear in the fight to repeal obamacare…he is uniquely qualified for same but he is not a person we want in office because of his troubling views and two very critical areas I referenced…

    • Beaver February 4, 2015 at 12:31 pm #

So he’s going to let them work here, but they can’t stay here while working, lol? The mental gymnastics you amnesty shills go through never cease to amaze me.

    • Beaver February 4, 2015 at 12:33 pm #

And newsflash, Rick…we already have a guest worker program….about 10 of them actually. Coming here illegally doesn’t entitle illegals to be rewarded with a new guest worker program.

Mychal, I agree 100% with your concerns about Dr. Carson. In fact, although, I was not aware of his less than desirable thinking about illegal aliens, I have written an article about a number of other statements he has made that are outright big government, liberal/Socialistic. As you surmised, there are also many questions that need to be answered about the good Doctor before considering him as presidential material.

That article was subsequently published on The Post & Email here:

Also, on the subject of presidential candidates, you readers may find the following interesting and informative:

I believe both articles contain a lot of information that needs to be spread far and wide; and, with that in mind, you have my permission to publish either or both in part or in their entirety, if you would like to do so.

jesse t. mims: thk yo for forwarding information…I think carson would be could advocate against oabamcare but that doesn’t make him presidential material…people jumping on his bandwagon based on a soundbite or two make my head hurt…

carrie barton: obviously you are either ill-informed or uninformed…carson is pro amnesty for illegals and does not support the Second Amendment as an absolute…plus he is more big government than people realize…if that is your understanding of bringing our republic back you are truly misguided…

Mychal, I do not disagree with your points, as they are good ones. I am a little unsure on some of Dr. Carson’s stands on some issues. The problem is, he speaks from the heart and not as someone who is running for public office. IF (big if) he should decide to run for President, he and his family would be vilified by the mainstream media and the liberal “voices”. The problem with some of his statements as I see it, is that he is and speaks as a Dr. who has taken his oath seriously. He sees Obamacare for what it is, he sees abortion for what it is and he sees the suffering of the illegals from a strictly a “caring for the underprivileged” viewpoint. He has made some statements which would come back to bite him if he should decide to run. I don’t believe he will ever consent to go through the meatgrinder of a Presidential campaign. I think he is intelligent enough to know that he is a sensitive, caring, loving human being and those qualities are not. what gets you to the Presidency today. That said, I am sure you will agree with me Mychal that over 200 million people in this country would make a better President than what we have now. Dr. Ben is certainly in that number as are you, your garbage man, your next door neighbor, the local 911 operator and probably almost everyone we both know. Most of us know that we have the moral fiber to not get caught up in the mendacity, compromise and outright deception it takes to be a successful politician. I believe you, me and Dr. Ben Carson are also members of that group. I know I sound like a bitter person, but I really believe that the person, who ever it is, who should be our next President has no hope of ever winning. May God help us.

This article is a hard-hitting statement. I don’t know how many times I’ve been guilty of latching on to someone, thinking “Yea, they’re with us!!”, and then finding out some things which made me feel like a fool for doing so. Not totally writing them off, but realizing the futility of hasty assessments. And since when is it a good thing to look to politicians as our great hope, when we should know Who the Hope for our country really is?

I have been aware of Dr. Carson and his life ordeals and achievements for many years. Probably longer than many bloggers are old. He has impressed me for many years. He will be a president that will bring our country back to prestige. Honor and world respect. He will be the president this country needs.
