Editor Caught Altering Content

For nearly a decade, my syndicated opinion-editorial column has appeared every week on the editorial pages of The Bradford Era newspaper. The managing editor during that time retired in December 2012. She freely admitted that she disagreed with most of my positions. But she was fair. I recall her saying she had an obligation to present both sides to her readership.

In January 2013, the publisher of The Bradford Era begged Mark Ivancic out of retirement to be managing editor and to turn the paper around. At least that’s Ivancic’s version. He has brought a penchant for underhandedness, dishonesty, intimidation, contempt for opinion that doesn’t conform to his, and a blatant disregard for the community and its readership.

If I were given to fomenting racial discord, Ivancic has presented me with the perfect opportunity. In January, out of all the syndicated columnists that appear on the paper’s editorial pages, by Ivancic’s own admission, I was the only one he personally called.

That he wasn’t calling any of the other syndicated writers, told me exactly what kind of person I was dealing with. He was sarcastic, condescending, and most of the time we spoke he boasted about himself. He also did not fail to imply he was successful financially, as if I were supposed to genuflect pursuant to same.

I can say, without fear of contradiction, that if I wanted to make a case for screaming racism that conversation was it. The new managing editor, who is a white male, called none of the other syndicated essayists but me, the black syndicated op-ed essayist on his editorial pages, and is not only sarcastic but also is insultingly condescending in what I perceived to be a bigoted manner.

Not long after that initial conversation, I received an email from him that necessitated my calling. He had taken the position that was tantamount to saying, my being a syndicated writer of opinion meant he would determine not just the verbiage he would “allow” me to use, but, he told me I had no opinions. He told me that, my opinions were not opinions unless he said they were. (A brief discussion ensued)

Now, I mind you, this is a white man telling a black man this, and he is doing it in a harsh, condescending manner. Can you imagine if this were done to a person of color who wanted to make gain based on perceived racial insult?

I discovered that Ivancic is refusing to run my op-eds that are critical of Obama, elite white liberals, and/or opinions concerning racial issues from an American conservative of color perspective.

I received letters from sources who out of fear for their economic safety to remain anonymous. Ivancic is doing his all to prevent my opinions from being published. Even more egregious and insulting to the paper’s readership — he made what many if not most blacks would view as the calculation that he could appease the readership by simply publishing another black face. Ergo, Ivancic started to run op-eds by Clarence Page, one of the most stridently left-wing blacks on the editorial pages today.

But, as I was informed by persons in the community, a person of color on the editorial page wasn’t what they wanted. They wanted the straight-forward, conservative opinion that I presented. A local resident and subscriber to the paper wrote, “It seems this editor has some serious problems with his character.” John Moffett a local resident and subscriber wrote, “I want to get through to him with one of the subjects about loss of readers.” I’m told that phone messages to Ivancic’s office were ignored.

John Moffett also wrote, “Mychal, I am in the process of writing the owner of the Bradford Era. I want to make him cognizant of the situation concerning the articles published in case he doesn’t know. We even have some guy from Miama writing articles about the sewer system in Miami. Who up here cares about that? I hope we can get something done to get it back to the way it was when Marty [the former managing editor] was there. I am going to have about ten people sign it. I am thinking…how to word it…to let him know we want ‘both sides of the story’ in the columns offered in the paper.”

This week, Ivancic committed the most grievous of sins. He deliberately changed my copyrighted, syndicated op-ed to read differently than I had written and intended. He deleted negative references about the media and specifically about managing editors who refused to run conservative opinion. ( the uncorrupted version here )

Ivancic is emblematic of why the mainstream media cannot be trusted. He has been entrusted with the sacred responsibility of keeping the public informed in an honest and truthful manner. Instead, he sets about surreptitiously altering news so as to mislead the public for the purposes of furthering the liberal agenda. He is proof of the lengths to which liberals will go to shape the news in their image.

Coming next: Is the publisher of The Bradford Era encouraging Mark Ivancic’s underhandedness and disrespect for conservatives of color?

I am from Bradford, PA, and I am extremely embarrassed to read this. Mr. Massie, please know that this town is so much more than this moron. People are kind, accepting, and empathetic. Though people may not always share the same views, most are respectful to those of a different opinion. A few years back, my mother submitted a simple, polite letter to the editor in regard to the poor condition of a local cemetery. They refused to publish her letter. They simply stated to her, that it was their discretion about what to publish. Sadly, this article does not surprise me in the least.

This is a definite slippery slope from a small town rag, but I am more concerned about paranoid, tinfoil hat rants from Alex Jones, and Glenn Beck and the gullible who believe them. Those two gentlemen wouldn't know the truth if it came up and bit them squarely in the ass…

I quit taking the Bradford Era a long time ago, as they edited my letters to the Editor, and just printed what they wanted. They are a very left leaning newspaper, I enjoyed it when your articles appeared, They stick some letters in to make them selves look fair but any left leaning loon is printed, and lots of my letters weren't. Glad you called them.

And you wonder why we can no longer trust the news?

Around here we call it the "Bradford Error". I meant to drop the rag several years ago when the sports editor wrote a witless and insulting column about the young men at our service academies prior to the Army-Navy game. This seals the deal.

That is why I cancelled the paper. They edited my letters to the editor. I told them why too. That’s when they had that woman as editor, so it isn’t just this guy.

I guess we are headed toward the type of “reporting” done in North Korea, Iran, Russia… Is this what you want America? Do your children belong to the collective? Can you think for yourself and take care of yourself? I know I’m not addressing any brain-dead, hoping for handouts, Uncle Sam’s my daddy kind of folks on this rant page, just venting!

Keep exposing the deeds of darkness, Mychal, as the Light of the Lord shines through you! You know you are in good company when you are on Satan’s most wanted list and his minions are attacking you. What an honor to be on the side of God while in the middle of a modern-day Biblical war in which men are being lovers of self and haters of truth! March on warrior of the Lord, march on!

Mr. Massie, I thank you for your candor and opinion. I think that you and readers of your
column need go no further than to consider your eloquence and erudition, to understand
this editor. He has to work to read your columns. This requires wisdom not just the abilities to decipher letters combined in a prescribed sequence to express thoughts and feelings.
I have known the previous editor since she was a cub reporter (1970s) for the Bradford Era. Although I often disagreed with her touch of sarcasm, frequent lack of tact and her directness when responding to comment, I at least read the paper with interest and specifically looked forward to your’s and George Will’s thoughts and opinions. I have known a major member of the publisher’s family since I was a small boy growing up with them. I am now 70. I would think that the publisher would think twice about letting his paper become a “liberal only rag”.
It would seem logical for you press for your publication even to the extent of legal action.
I am embarassed for my community. I have heard same from professionals in the Era’s readership. What was balanced is definitely not now!
For years, I have read the Era as well as the sister paper, Olean Times Herald.
You can rest ashured that the readership of the opinion page will decline and the subscription of the paper along with it. This is a relatively tolerant community, regardless
of the Era’s staff and editor. Thus we will look forward to your column, if not in the Era
in the new paper that I will begin reading.

Disgraceful! Ivancic must not get away with changing opinions on the op-ed pages of his paper. This is libel, pure and simple.
