Sodom, Gomorrah and The Days of Noah – Sunday Thought For The Day

In the 24th chapter of Matthew, the 37th verse, Jesus said: “But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” (KJV)  Most Christians are familiar with this passage of scripture; but how many have considered in depth the period of time to which Jesus is referring?

Specific to my question; in Genesis 6:5-6 KJV; we read an anthropomorphism, i.e., the attributing of human attributes to God, here used to express: “That the overwhelming of mankind by a flood, and the subsequent abbreviation of life, is set before our eyes as painful to the Deity, and contrary to His goodwill towards men, but as necessitated by the extreme depravity.” (Ellicott’s commentary to English readers)

Humans had become so wicked that God was grieved in having even created man.  Jamison-Fausset-Brown said it well: “[God] is described as about to alter His visible procedure towards mankind—from being merciful and long-suffering, He was about to show Himself a God of judgment; and, as that impious race had filled up the measure of their iniquities, He was about to introduce a terrible display of His justice.”

As wicked as the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were, God destroyed only those two cities, not every life-form and the earth itself, as He did in the days of Noah and family.

Many people today reference Sodom and Gomorrah, even making jokes about God’s need to apologize to those people if He doesn’t punish individuals of today.  But, these same people blissfully ignore the words of Christ found in Matthew 24:37 as referenced in the opening paragraph.

When we read the verses I’m speaking on today, we should ask God to give us understanding so we are able to understand how wicked mankind will become prior to the Lord’s return to gather the born-again together with Him.

When that happens ever single person left behind will begin a period of suffering that is eclipsed only by the pain and eternity of hell itself.  This is no laughing matter.  It’s nothing to joke about.

The people of Sodom and Gomorrah were wicked and deserved being reduced to ashes.  But, in the days of Noah, the world had become wicked to the point that every man, woman, child and living creature, with the exception of those taken aboard the Ark, were destroyed.  

A question seldom asked, is: “What would life be like today, if God had not destroyed the world with the flood?  But, perhaps I digress.”

The words of Christ referencing His return to rapture His church are beyond urgent.  The truth I’m speaking to you should make every unsaved person reassess their reasons for rejecting God.

Today’s Sunday Thought should make those who are living the pretend to be saved act, when in reality they either know for fact that they aren’t saved or they cannot say with 100 hundred certainty that they are saved – this is your “now moment.”  By the time you go to take your next breath it could be too late.

If you are saved, share today’s Sunday Thought with someone you know isn’t saved or suspect isn’t saved.
