The Second Petition of The Lord’s Prayer – Sunday Thought For The Day
The Lord’s Prayer is comprised of seven petitions. There are three “thy-petitions:” thy name, thy kingdom, thy will; followed by four “us-petitions:” give us, forgive us, lead us not and deliver us. In today’s Sunday Thought, we’re focusing on the second petition.
The second petition is: “Thy kingdom come.” In the Greek New Testament the word for kingdom is: basileia, which means kingdom, sovereignty, royal power. It’s used to convey kingship, sovereignty, authority, rule, especially of God, both in the world, and in the hearts of men.
You’ve no doubt prayed this petition a countless number of times. When we pray it, we’re asking God to establish His kingdom of sovereignty and royal power in earth as men turn their hearts living holy and obedient lives.
When we pray this petition we’re interceding for the salvation of the lost and also for holiness and obedience to Christ’s commandments. It’s a prayer that God will have preeminence in the hearts of men; that His laws will be obeyed; and especially that the gospel of Christ may be advanced everywhere, until the world is filled with his glory.
The important thing for us to remember is, that this prayer is sufficient for this period now, when we are under grace. There’s a future day/period coming, when we will no longer have need to pray this prayer. That will be the day of Christ’s return and the New Jerusalem. It will be the day that there’s no more sin, pain or wickedness. It will be the day we worship God and our Savior, when the enemy of our souls and his progeny are cast into the lake of fire.
