The Doctrines of Demons by ‘Brother Bill’
What are some of the tendencies of the Doctrines of demons Paul spoke about and how can we spot them?
⸻What Paul Means by “Doctrines of Demons”
1 Timothy 4:1 (NKJV)“…some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”Paul is describing teachings (not people) that originate from spiritual deception, leading believers away from the gospel. The New Testament gives us categories of these teachings.⸻1. Denying the Deity or Incarnation of Christ
This is the central doctrine of demons.A. Denying Christ’s incarnation1 John 4:3 (NKJV)“…every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.”B. Denying Jesus is the Christ1 John 2:22–23 (NKJV)“He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.”Any system that removes:• Christ’s deity• Christ’s incarnation• Christ’s lordship• the uniqueness of Christis labeled by Scripture as antichrist, which is equivalent to “doctrines of demons.”⸻2. Preaching “another Jesus,” “another gospel,” or “another spirit”
2 Corinthians 11:3–4 (NKJV)“…if he who comes preaches another Jesus… or a different gospel… you may well put up with it!”Galatians 1:8–9 (NKJV)“…if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel… let him be accursed.”This covers:• false messiahs• counterfeit gospels• revelations from “angels” contradicting Scripture• teachings that distort the nature or work of Christ⸻3. Forbidding Marriage & Promoting Ascetic Bondage
Paul actually gives two examples directly:1 Timothy 4:3 (NKJV)“forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods…”Doctrines of demons often involve:• legalistic asceticism• man-made restrictions claiming to be spiritual• adding burdens God never commanded⸻4. Legalism as a Path to Salvation
Legalistic systems are repeatedly identified with demonic influence.Galatians 3:1 (NKJV)“O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you…?”The word “bewitched” refers to spiritual deception.Colossians 2:20–23 (NKJV)“…why… do you subject yourselves to regulations—Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle… These things… are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.”⸻5. Sexual Immorality Promoted as Spiritual Freedom
The NT repeatedly identifies sexual permissiveness as demonic deception.Revelation 2:20–24 (NKJV)“that woman Jezebel… teaches… to commit sexual immorality… the depths of Satan…”Jude 4 (NKJV)“…ungodly men… turn the grace of our God into lewdness…”⸻6. Denial of the Resurrection, Judgment, or the Afterlife
This is also considered demonic deception.1 Corinthians 15:12–14 (NKJV)“How do some among you say that there is no resurrection…?”2 Peter 3:3–4 (NKJV)“…scoffers… saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming?’”⸻7. Idolatry, Spirit Contact, Occultism, & Sorcery
These are explicitly tied to demons.1 Corinthians 10:20 (NKJV)“the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons…”Deuteronomy 18:10–12 (NKJV)“There shall not be found among you… one who practices witchcraft… for all who do these things are an abomination…”Acts 13:10 (NKJV)“full of all deceit… you son of the devil…”(spoken to a sorcerer)⸻8. Teachings that Promise Liberation While Enslaving People
False spiritual freedom that leads to bondage.2 Peter 2:19 (NKJV)“…they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption…”This includes:• gnostic enlightenment• mystical “ascension”• “awakening” movements• self-deification systems⸻9. Teachings Fueled by Lying Spirits, Prophetic Delusion, or “Great Signs”
Matthew 24:24 (NKJV)“…false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders…”2 Thessalonians 2:9–10 (NKJV)“…with all power, signs, and lying wonders…”⸻10. Anything That Replaces Christ with Another Savior—Political or Religious
Colossians 2:8 (NKJV)“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit… and not according to Christ.”Any system that:• replaces Christ with ideology• makes the state the savior• uses coercion instead of truth• gives people a false eschatologyis included.⸻The Biblical Summary
