What Paul Means by “Doctrines of Demons”

1 Timothy 4:1 (NKJV)

“…some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”

Paul is describing teachings (not people) that originate from spiritual deception, leading believers away from the gospel.

The New Testament gives us categories of these teachings.

1. Denying the Deity or Incarnation of Christ

This is the central doctrine of demons.

A. Denying Christ’s incarnation

1 John 4:3 (NKJV)

“…every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.”

B. Denying Jesus is the Christ

1 John 2:22–23 (NKJV)

“He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.”

Any system that removes:

   •   Christ’s deity

   •   Christ’s incarnation

   •   Christ’s lordship

   •   the uniqueness of Christ

is labeled by Scripture as antichrist, which is equivalent to “doctrines of demons.”
