Respect For The Name of The Lord — Sunday Thought For The Day

I have a couple questions for you. To make the point that needs be made the questions may be necessarily borderline untoward. So here goes.

If a person claims to love and have the deepest respect for their wife, children, girlfriend/boyfriend, parents, relatives, ad nauseum, do they curse them publicly? Do they speak in coarse, crude, and vulgar ways about those they claim to love and revere regardless of where they are? I would hope the answer to the questions would be an emphatic no.

Which brings me to my point. If a person claims to be a Christian, and to have the deepest respect and reverence for Jesus, why do they not see anything wrong with treating His name in a way that they wouldn’t treat their loved ones? If Jesus is a person’s Lord and Savior, how can they speak so crudely using His name as a curse word? If a person says they love God, why would they use His name as a curse word?

In the Old Testament Book of Exodus God said: “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.” Granted we are no longer under the “Law,” .i.e, the Ten Commandments, it was important enough to God to include in the Ten Commandments, and being under today under “grace” doesn’t absolve from the guilt of so using His name.

Using the Lord’s name as a curse word and/or as part of an adjectival clause, should be as objectionable to us as it is to God. If using God’s name as a curse word is a habit, it is one that needs to be broken sooner rather than later. If we wouldn’t speak in such terms about our earthly loved ones, we might think how much more so it is offensive to God.

Only a handful bowed at His birth, but the day comes when every knee shall bow at His Name and it won’t be as a curse word.
