If one of my children still living at home decided to exhibit a “Pride” flag hanging from a window in their room, I would explain to my child that symbol is unacceptable conduct and would not allow its continued display. Instead, I would remind them that particular symbol promotes behavior condemned by Scripture and is offensive to our family’s culture.

On the other hand, if my child was living in their own home and, while visiting, I noticed their display, I would counsel them a bit differently. I would say that I hope they remember the values and moral compass we taught them while growing up and ask them if the flag they are promoting through its display in their window reflects those ideals or opposes them, and if it is the latter, is that the image they want to present to the world? So now they must choose between two opposing world views and decide which one they will follow.

The Chosen television series drama about the life of Jesus is now under fire because it allowed a gay pride flag, captured in a still photograph, on its set. The creator and director of the series has defended its inclusion by publishing the following tweet, “Just like with our hundreds of cast and crew who have different beliefs (or no belief at all) than we do, we will work with anyone on our show who helps us portray or honor the authentic Jesus.”

Working with anyone to accomplish a mission can be noble in its endeavor depending on the goal. Still, I ardently disagree with the premise that permitting the flag to fly on the set and intentionally defending it is honoring the authentic Jesus. A conversation like the hypothetical I postulated above should have ensued with the offending cameraman, and the flag removed from the set, allowing the cameraman to maintain his position and completely understand the paramount importance of Scripture. Instead, the calculated response The Chosen posted to be “inclusive” offends the sensibilities of God-fearing Believers who have invested their time in the show’s wholesome entertainment and historical accuracy. Unfortunately, our culture has determined that the Christian Believer is the demographic whose moral compass must shift and can be cajoled, humiliated, and canceled. Many well-meaning Christians have taken that bait hook, line, and sinker. The Faith-based community has been dealt another disappointment because Scripture is clear in its condemnation of homosexuality, and the pride flag flies anathema to its position.

I am not advocating for or against The Chosen’s interpretation of Scripture adapted to the screen. It is necessary to tread lightly when visiting any adaptation of Scripture in the visual arts. We must be diligent as the Bereans to study the Scriptures and see if these things are so. I would be remiss without bearing the reminder that the Scripture the Bereans had to study we affectionately call the Old Testament. On the other hand, I am advocating for Christians to unashamedly defend Jesus preaching to, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” (Matthew 4:17) and be strong and courageous in that noble endeavor.
