Every con man since the Garden of Eden has sold the same product with a new label.  The pitch in the Garden wasn’t “disobey God” — nobody buys that outright.  The pitch was upgrade: stop being a creature, start being a god.  “You will not surely die,” the serpent said, “for God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:4-5).  That’s the oldest sales script in the world, and every tyrant, every cult leader, and every reasonably ordinary sinner has been running some version of it ever since.

Here’s the part folks skip past: the itch for control isn’t itself the disease.  It’s a design feature gone septic.  God built man to run things — Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28).  Dominion, submitted to the Owner, is stewardship.  Dominion, seized from the Owner, is rebellion wearing a management title.  Same drive, opposite address.

That’s why the same itch that once managed a garden now explains a fair amount of the evening news.  Ask why a Marxist commissar and a jihadist enforcer, doctrinally miles apart, keep landing on the same street corner in the same rally, chanting past each other but marching in step not just in New York.  Strip the theology and the economics off both, and underneath you find one identical mechanism: force submission, silence dissent, replace the true God with a human — or ideological — substitute wearing His stolen authority.  Scripture has a name for that operating system, and it isn’t subtle: it calls it the spirit of Antichrist, the spirit that already works in the world by getting men to deny that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh and to set up something else in His place (1 John 4:2-3, paraphrased in essence though the letter is precise enough on its own that I won’t improve on it by summarizing).

Christ’s mission runs the opposite direction entirely.  Where every coercive system says submit or suffer, He announced: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18-19).  Notice the verbs. Not conquer, not compel, not convert-or-die. Preach, heal, proclaim, set at liberty.  One kingdom builds its palace on fear.  The other builds a cross and calls it victory.

● Name a system, relationship, or habit in your life that runs on coercion rather than invitation. What would it cost to walk out from under it?

● Why do you think ideologies that agree on almost nothing else — communism and radical Islamism, for instance — so often find common cause authoritarianism  against the same target?

Closing Challenge

Sooo for this session , catch yourself the next time you reach for control that was never yours to take.
