Moody’s Words Are Truth For Today – Sunday Thought For The Day

Two of the many quotes by the 19th century American evangelist Dwight L. Moody, cannot be overstated today.  The first: “Everybody wants to enjoy heaven after they die, but they don’t want to be heavenly-minded while they live.”  The second to which I refer is: “The Bible was not given for our information but for our transformation.”

Truer words have seldom been spoken.  Today many self-professing Christians wax poetically about heaven blah-blah-blah.  But, their lives are a contradiction to how scriptures instruct us to live.  In short they want heaven, but they refuse to live as God instructs.  We cannot live righteously and at the same time embrace that which God calls sin.  We can say we love Jesus, but Jesus said: “if ye love me keep my commandments.” (John 14:15 KJV) 

As I have said many times over, Jesus would not have told us “to keep [His] commandments”  if it were not possible to do same.  But, in order to keep His commandments we must know to what He is referring; and we cannot know that if we do not read and study God’s Word.

The bible was not intended to be a repository for the dates of marriages, births, deaths and church bulletins, assuming we even take the bible to church; which many people today fail to do, because it is easier to take our cell phones and/or digital tablets/iPads.

Moody’s words are more relevant today than at any time.  People want heaven, but do not want to be obedient to God’s Word.  It is easy to establish our own righteousness when we do not read the Word of God.

There are those who attend bible studies that teach knowledge, but fail to teach the transformative application of God’s Word.  So-called pastors preach love, but refuse to preach on sin.

If we are true born again Christians, we are transformed from what we were, to what Christ calls us to be.
