Storing Up Things That Have Eternal Value – Sunday Thought For The Day
Friday evening at church a friend and I were discussing how we used to collect things. Everything from sporting memorabilia to books and dishes.
Our discussion focused upon how we had both reached a point that we began to question why we were investing so much in things that we were becoming slaves to accumulating? Things that we were not going to take with us when we passed on.
We had both concluded that we wanted to share more of our material gain investing in the work of the Lord, than accumulating what we were not going to take with us when our time on earth was over.
Tangential to that our conversation brought to remembrance a church bible study several years ago. A woman had made a profound observation. She said: “we spend a lot of time preparing for our future, but not the future that truly counts.”
She was right. We take great pains to make sure we have prepared for our children’s college. We work hard and save wisely to prepare for our retirement years. We plan for future vacations and future items to purchase. But, how many ignore the only future that really counts?
If only we spent the time preparing as meticulously for our eternal future as we do preparing for a future here on earth that is not guaranteed. Everything we have here on earth, will stay here when we die. Therefore, it should be of more concern that not one of us knows when our life here on earth will end.
I’m not saying or suggesting it is wrong to enjoy collecting things. I am saying, if we become slaves to collecting and hoarding, we are potentially storing up things here on earth that have no eternal value.

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
